Building Community
In its inaugural year, Scoil na Rince has reached over 100 elementary school students, averaging twelve dancers per session, many of whom return term after term. Classes are sited in schools within the community, and focus on introducing students to Irish language, music and culture through dance. Participating schools have included:
* Ashbrook Independent School ~ Corvallis, Oregon
* Bridger Elementary ~ Portland, Oregon * Creative Science School ~ Portland, Oregon |
* Glencoe Elementary ~ Portland, Oregon
* Roseway Heights ~ Portland, Oregon * Sabin Elementary ~ Portland, Oregon |
The Curriculum
Scoil na Rince operates in six- to ten-week sessions coinciding with the academic calendar. All of our qualified staff are vetted and first-aid certified, teaching a curriculum that includes:
* Fundamental Irish dance technique & movement
* Introductory step dancing * Introductory group dancing |
* Structure of traditional Irish music
* Basic Irish language conversation * Introductory Irish history |
Each session culminates with a recital or all-school performance to demonstrate what the students have learned. The dancers and their families then celebrate the end of the session with an Irish "hooley," or party.
Beyond the Classroom
Students are encouraged to repeat Scoil na Rince as often as they'd like. But if they're ready to move beyond the basics, ongoing classes are provided in partnership with An Daire Academy of Irish Dance. Continuing beginners have the opportunity to participate in workshops, performances and competitions.
